Mali launches mechanism to monitor mining activities – November 2012
Mali has launched a mechanism to monitor mining activities, including controls and access to information on mining revenues (PAGIRM), PANA reported from here Saturday.
Launched in Sikasso, 480 km south of the capital, Bamako, the mechanism is an initiative of the Foundation for Sahel Development (FDS), in collaboration with its technical and financial partner, Diakonia, Mali.
The mechanism, to be implemented from 2012 to 2014, is aimed at improving governance and the access to information on mining revenues in the districts of Fourou, Sanso, Kalama, in the region of Sikasso (south), and Sadiola and Sitakili, in the region of Kayes (west).
Mali, which has nine gold exploitation sites and produces 50 tonnes of gold annually, is said to be Africa’s third largest gold producer behind South Africa and Ghana.
According to the FDS, gold represents 70% of the export receipts in Mali and about 15% of the country’s GDP. Source: African Manager
Este neclar care dintre fundații dedicate Sahelului este această ”Foundation for Sahel Development (FDS)”, una este britanică, alta coordonată de Vatican lansată în anii 80 cu fonduri din Germania, dar Diakonia este clar o fundație suedeză.
Diakonia is a faith based Swedish development organization. We work with and support more than 400 local partner organizations in about 35 countries. Together with our partners we form a global network, working towards more people living a life in dignity.
Together with its partner organizations, national and local NGOs, Diakonia works nearly in all regions of Mali. The thematic areas of our work in Mali are: Human Rights, Democracy, Social and Economic Justice, Education and Gender Equality.
